JAKARTA,PesisirNasional- Banyak orang minum kopi sambil merokok, dan sejak lama rokok dikaitkan dengan kanker paru. Tapi
temuan terbaru menunjukkan bahwa kopi itu sendiri juga ‘mungkin’ berhubungan dengan risiko kanker paru.
Temuan mengejutkan bagi penggemar kopi ini dipresentasikan dalam pertemuan tahunan American Association for Cancer Research
akhir Maret lalu.
Penelitinya, Jingjing Zhu, mahasiswa PhD dari Vanderbilt University di Tennessee, menggunakan data dari 17 penelitian
berbeda. Total ada sebanyak 1,2 juta partisipan di Amerika Serikat dan Asia terlibat dalam riset-riset tersebut.
Penelitian ini membagi para partisipan dalam beberapa kategori, antara lain peminum kopi atau teh, dan perokok atau bukan
perokok. Sekitar 50 persen adalah non perokok. Dalam pengamatan selama rata-rata 8,6 tahun, sebanyak 20.500 partisipan
terserang kanker paru.
Hasil analisis menunjukkan, non perokok yang minum 2 cangkir atau lebih kopi tiap hari punya risiko 41 persen lebih tinggi
untuk terkena kanker paru. Non perokok yang minum teh dalam jumlah yang sama, punya risiko 37 persen lebih tinggi untuk kena
kanker paru.
Temuan ini tidak serta menyimpulkan adanya hubungan sebab akibat, sehingga tidak bisa begitu saja dikatakan kopi atau teh
menyebabkan kanker paru. Bahkan, penelitinya meyakini peningkatan risiko justru bukan karena kopi.
“Mungkin sesuati dalam proses roasting (pemanggangan biji kopi) yang menyebabkan keterkaitan kopi dengan risiko kanker paru,”
kata Zhu dalam wawancara dengan Livescience.
